Daughter of the Revolution: The Major Nonfiction Works of Pauline Hopkins (Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the Americas)

Review Daughter of the Revolution: The Major Nonfiction Works of Pauline Hopkins (Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the Americas) Books

Daughter of the Revolution: The Major Nonfiction Works of Pauline Hopkins (Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the Americas) Overview

Pauline E. Hopkins (1859–1930) came to prominence in the early years of the twentieth century as an outspoken writer, editor, and critic. Frequently recognized for her first novel, Contending Forces, she emerged as one of the most prolific African American women writers of fiction prior to 1930 and is currently one of the most widely read and studied African American novelists from that period.

While nearly all of Hopkins’s fiction remains in print, there is very little of her nonfiction available. This reader brings together dozens of her hard-to-find essays. Also included are longer nonfiction works such as Famous Men of the Negro Race, Famous Women of the Negro Race, The Dark Races of the Twentieth Century, and A Primer of Facts Pertaining to the Early Greatness of the African Race and the Possibility of Restoration by Its Descendents, some of which are published here for the first time in their entirety.

Through these works, along with two juvenile essays from the 1870s, a personal letter, and two speeches, readers encounter a voice that is committed to constructing an international discourse on race, recovering the militant abolitionist tradition to combat Jim Crow, celebrating black political participation during and after the Reconstruction era, articulating the connections between race and labor, and insisting on equal rights for women. Hopkins’s writing will challenge contemporary scholars to rethink their understanding of black activism and modernity in the early twentieth century.

A Long Way From Home (Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the Americas)

Review A Long Way From Home (Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the Americas) Books

A Long Way From Home (Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the Americas) Overview

Claude McKay (1889–1948) was one of the most prolific and sophisticated African American writers of the early twentieth century. A Jamaican-born author of poetry, short stories, novels, and nonfiction, McKay has often been associated with the "New Negro" or Harlem Renaissance, a movement of African American art, culture, and intellectualism between World War I and the Great Depression. But his relationship to the movement was complex. Literally absent from Harlem during the Renaissance, McKay devoted most of his time to traveling through Europe, Russia, and Africa during the 1920s and 1930s. His active participation in Communist groups and the radical Left also encouraged certain opinions on race and class that strained his relationship to the Harlem Renaissance and its black intelligentsia.

In his 1937 autobiography, A Long Way from Home, McKay explains what it means to be a black "rebel sojourner" and presents one of the first unflattering, yet informative, exposés of the Harlem Renaissance. Reprinted here with a critical introduction by Gene Andrew Jarrett, this book will challenge readers to rethink McKay’s articulation of identity, art, race, and politics and situate these topics in terms of his oeuvre and his literary contemporaries between the World Wars.

Holy Prayers in a Horse's Ear: A Japanese American Memoir (Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the Americas (Mela))

Review Holy Prayers in a Horse's Ear: A Japanese American Memoir (Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the Americas (Mela)) Books

Holy Prayers in a Horse's Ear: A Japanese American Memoir (Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the Americas (Mela)) Overview

Originally published in 1932, Kathleen Tamagawa's pioneering Asian American memoir is a sensitive and thoughtful look at the personal and social complexities of growing up racially mixed during the early twentieth century. Born in 1893 to an Irish American mother and a Japanese father and raised in Chicago and Japan, Tamagawa reflects on the difficulty she experienced fitting into either parent's native culture.

She describes how, in America, her every personal quirk and quality was seen as quintessentially Japanese and how she was met unpredictably with admiration or fear-perceived as a "Japanese doll" or "the yellow menace." When her family later moved to Japan, she was viewed there as a "Yankee," and remained an outsider in that country as well. As an adult she came back to the United States as an American diplomat's wife, but had trouble feeling at home in any place.

This edition, which also includes Tamagawa's recently rediscovered short story, "A Fit in Japan," and a critical introduction, will challenge readers to reconsider how complex ethnic identities are negotiated and how feelings of alienation limit human identification in any society.
